Eye Exams

What is a comprehensive eye exam?

At Netra Eye Care, a comprehensive eye exam goes beyond a standard check-up of your eyes. Our doctors thoroughly examine your eyes and visual abilities in great detail. At Netra Eye Care, our doctors will ask you a variety of questions including your medical history, family health history, and more general questions regarding your lifestyle; all of which play a role in your vision and eye health. Based on your answers and concerns, our doctors will take the time to treat and provide you with the care your eyes need and deserve.

Routine comprehensive eye exams are vital to help prevent long-term vision problems. If you or someone you know has trouble focusing or are having trouble seeing, our doctors are available to treat you right away and get you fitted for eye glasses or contact lenses. For other issues, our doctors will discuss a treatment plan with you and provide you with helpful information allowing you to make an informed decision for your eye health.

While an eye exam will vary depending on various factors, an eye exam will usually include:

  • Visual acuity testing to measure how clearly you see at various distances.
  • Testing for refractive error including but not limited to Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism. This test will allow us to determine your need for corrective lenses.
  • Binocular testing to see how the eyes work together, including but not limited to depth perception, colour vision and muscle testing.
  • Slit Lamp Exam and Dilated Fundus Exams: Tests done to further evaluate if you have any ocular diseases and conditions related to the overall health of your eyes.

Netra Eye Care prides itself on providing our patients with comprehensive eye exams that assess all aspects of their eye health. We use the latest medical equipment and cutting-edge technology to ensure that our patients receive the best quality of care possible.

At Netra Eye Care, our doctors will create a customized treatment plan for each patient to ensure results from the therapy. There is no age limit to vision therapy.

Laser Eye Surgery

At Netra Eye Care, our doctors offer pre-operative and post-operative care for our patients who choose to have LASIK, PRK, cataract surgery or other eye surgeries performed. Our goal and mission is to help improve the quality of life of our patients by allowing them to correct their vision without aids such as glasses or contacts lenses.

Evaluation and Referral:

The doctors at Netra Eye Care will provide evaluations and referrals for patients who are interested in any laser surgery, including LASIK, PRK, Corneal Cross Linking and cataract surgery. The doctor will perform a comprehensive eye exam including the stability of the prescription as well as a check-up of your eye health.

This exam will enable the doctor to determine if you are a good candidate to undergo surgery. After a full assessment of the eyes, if the patient is deemed a good candidate for surgery, they will be given a referral to the surgery centre. Further testing at the centre will determine the patient’s eligibility for surgery. Once the surgery is successfully completed, the post-operative care and follow up appointments will be arranged at Netra Eye Care and your primary doctor.

Contact Lens Fitting

Whether it is a night out with friends or a family vacation, Netra Eye Care will provide you with contact lenses for any occasion. Contact lenses are a great way to have clear vision without having to wear your glasses. Having contact lenses that fit your eyes are important and if not fitted correctly may affect your vision and eye health. If contact lenses are something you have been wanting to try or if your eyes are uncomfortable and are having vision issues with your current contacts, our doctors at Netra Eye Care will be happy to set up a contact lens fitting and exam. A contact lens fitting exam will include a comprehensive eye exam by our doctors to first determine if your eyes are suitable for the wear of a contact lens, followed by the fitting process.

The Fitting process is personalized by our doctors for each individual but will usually include:

  • A measurement the curvature of your cornea, the clear, outermost layer of your eye.
  • A calculation of the contact lens prescription based off of your glasses’ prescription.
  • A tear film evaluation to make sure your eyes are not too dry to wear the contact lenses.
  • An evaluation to make sure that there is enough movement of the contact lenses when they are inserted into your eyes to allow optimal eye health.
  • A teaching session to train you on how to insert and remove the contact lenses, if required.

Corrective Lenses

After our doctors have determined the level of your refractive error, they will then help you decide which contact lenses are best suited for your lifestyle. There are different types of contact lenses available, such as soft, rigid gas permeable, or multifocal contact lenses. The variety of contact lenses all come with different time frames of how often they need to be changed (daily, bi-weekly, or monthly). Specialized contact lenses are also an option for patients with more unique vision needs.

Coloured Cosmetic Lenses

If you are looking for a way to change your eye colour, Netra Eye Care has the option to customize your contact lenses. Advances in contact lens technology have made it possible to create lenses that look natural and come in a variety of colours. Whether you are looking for a subtle change or a drastic transformation, there's a cosmetic lens out there for you.

During your contact lens fitting, we will take the time to assess your individual needs and determine the best type of contact lenses for you. We will also provide you with information on how to care for your lenses and answer any questions you may have. At Netra Eye Care, our doctors offer a holistic approach to contact lenses. From comfort to fitting, our patients will safely enjoy the convenience of contact lenses while protecting their vision and eye health.

Ocular Disease Management

The doctors at Netra Eye Care will provide you with a thorough examination of your eyes to diagnose, treat and manage any ocular disease you may have. From diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and any other ocular disease that may arise, our doctors are here to help and provide care and treatment. Netra Eye Care prides itself in providing holistic eye care and will refer you to a specialist and create a co-management plan with them.

Some examples of Ocular Diseases that may arise during an eye exam are:

  • Dry eye is a condition in which a person is lacking quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. A common and often chronic issue, it is usually found in older adults, patients who spend a substantial amount of time on computer screens and people who wear contact lenses.
  • Cataracts are an area of the eye in which the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy or opaque. This issue can interfere with normal vision and cause discomfort depending on a variety of factors such as the size and location of the cataract.
  • Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that affects people with diabetes. This condition can cause damage to the retina in the back of the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy can become a serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes unless treated early.
  • Glaucoma is an eye disease that results in progressive and permanent damage to the optic nerve. When left untreated, people with glaucoma can lose nerve tissue, resulting in vision loss.
  • Macular Degeneration is an eye disease that occurs when there are changes to the macula - a small portion of the retina. The macula is responsible for our central vision.
  • Keratoconus is a vision disorder that happens when the cornea, which is the front part of the eye, becomes progressively thinner and cone-shaped. This means that the light that enters the eye cannot be focused correctly on the retina, which results in distorted vision.
